The Advent Wreath

The circle of the wreath reminds us of God Himself, His eternity and endless mercy, which has no beginning or end. The four candles are for each Sunday in Advent, and, on Christmas Eve, the white Christ candle will be placed in the center and lit, symbolizing that Christ is the Light of the World.

Advent wreath symbolism:

Boxwood and Evergreens – the everlasting quality of God
Straw – the Nativity of our Lord
Pomander and Apples – original sin
Holly – the crown of thorns
Cloves and Cinnamon – the death and burial of Jesus
Curl of Dried Orange Peel – the bitter gall of the Crucifixion
English Ivy – recognition of the common communion with Great Britain and the Anglican Church
Grapevine and Wheat – the bread and wine of the Eucharist
Pine Cones – the Resurrection and the Breaking forth from the tomb
